NATIONAL PARKS OF CROATIA – HIKING TOUR

Day 1, ZAGREB –OPATIJA

  • Upon arrival at Zagreb Airport, drive to Opatija. Dinner and overnight in Opatija.

Day 2, NORTH VELEBIT NATIONAL PARK - OPATIJA

  • Morning drive to Krasno-a small picturesque mountain village in the vicinity of the North Velebit National Park and a well-known pilgrimage place of Our Lady of Krasno. Hiking tour will start from Krasno across the green and wooded slopes to the village of Kuterevo, famous for its wooden carved products and excellent cheese. Kuterevo is also known as a shelter for young bears who could otherwise not survive in the wilderness of Velebit. We will visit the bear shelter and local farms where a wooden souvenir, a useful dish or a tool can be bought. We will continue our journey to Otočac by van and en route visit the village of Sinac. Situated at the spring of the River Gacka, this picturesque village is protected by UNESCO as an International Biosphere Preserve. Drive to Opatija, where we will have dinner and spend the night. Ascent: 180 (Climb) Descent: 190 m Hiking: 4 hrs

Day 3, OPATIJA -RISNJAK NATIONAL PARK -PLITVICE

  • Morning departure for Risnjak. Risnjak Mountain as the National Park is named after the big lynx, the biggest European wild cat. Risnjak National Park is the only habitat of the big lynx. We will hike through the forest of thick and high beech and fir -tree up to the peak of Risnjak (1523m), from where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Gorski Kotar, Kvarner Islands and Istrian Peninsula, and even parts of Slovenia. After a break we descend its beautiful green slopes to the place called Crni Lug, where our van will be waiting for you. Thanks to the opposite influences, coastal and continental, the National Park is abundant and rich in variety, which makes it one of most interesting Parks in this part of the world. Drive to Plitvice, where we will spend the night. Ascent: 373 m Descent: 750m Hiking: 4.30 hrs

Day 4, PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK

  • Another beautiful day in the most beautiful National Park, Plitvice Lakes, the oldest and largest Croatian national park and one of the most famous parks in Europe listed by UNESCO as one of the most valuable nature reserves in the world. We start touring the lakes by a small train that will take us up to Upper Lakes (Gornja Jezera).We will hike from there along the numerous cascades and waterfalls with limestone barriers to Lake Kozjak. Park's boat will take us to Lower Lakes (Donja Jezera), where we will continue our stroll around, above and below waterfalls. At the end of the hike, we will take a break under the high beech trees; enjoy the silence and freshness of the air. Overnight in Plitvice. Ascent: 000 m Descent: 150 m Hiking: 4 hrs

Day 5, PLITVICE -PAKLENICA NATIONAL PARK -ZADAR

  • Morning departure is scheduled for Starigrad that is situated near Paklenica. This region is simple and unusual in its connection between the sea and the mountains, rich in beech and black pine forests. Its deep canyons cut vertically into the Velebit ridge, its formations and numerous caves and pits. We hike among impressive rocks of the great canyon of Velika Paklenica, the famous climb zone where more than a thousand climbing championships have been organized. Accompanied by the murmur of the Paklenica spring, we reach the area of Anića Kuk and further uphill to the famous cave Manita peć. We will visit the interior of the cave. We continue to Lugarnica for a visit to its reconstructed mills built in the characteristic “Paklenica “style. Drive to Zadar where we will spend the night. Ascent: 490 m Descent: 490 m Hiking: 5.30 hrs

Day 6, ZADAR -KRKA NATIONAL PARK -ZADAR

  • Morning drive to the village of Brnjica on the plateau of the Čikola River Canyon. We will continue on foot to the canyon dominated by the impressive fortress Kljućica from 1330. We will visit the Fortress and a hike to the mouth of the Čikola and Krka Rivers will follow. We will hike along the extremely steep and picturesque canyon up to Torak, a round lake where we will take a short break. Follow the canyon's edge and enjoy the view of the Čikola’s mouth where she flows into the Krka River. We will arrive at the village of Goris, where our van will be waiting for us. We will drive to Skradinski buk waterfall in the Krka River National Park, famous for its beauty all over the world. Drive to Zadar. Overnight in Zadar. Ascent: 166 m Descent: 184 m Hiking: 4.30 hrs

Day 7, ZADAR -KORNATI NATIONAL PARK – ZADAR

  • Morning departure to Zadar, where we will embark on a wooden old timer boat that will take us to the pearl of the National Parks on Adriatic Sea, the archipelago of Kornati islands. Following lunch in the Mir bay, and a nice walk to the salt lake Mir, we will explore its banks and climb to the cliffs. Enjoy the view of the glittering sea with a row of islands and islets. Return to Zadar in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight. Ascent: 70 m Descent: 70 m Hiking: 2 hrs Day 8, Departure Transfer to Zadar airport for your return flight.
